Onsite team development keeps work real – perhaps sometimes too much so
Business continues, interruptions sneaking in and focus is taken away from the team development process. On site team development as a result inevitably is slower.
Using group identity theory to model real teams, Individuals need to grow into new team experiences and trust new methods of working together.
Off sites add cost, whilst allowing individuals to more rapidly establish team membership, without the walls that work place around them slowing the process down.
Having tried many venues for team and leadership development, I’ve found greatest success using sailing yachts.
Yachting works effectively as a team space plus a model team space testing platform and offers self-contained accommodation.
On a yacht at sea you can truly play with teamwork, team leadership and team performance safely and effectively. Teams can experiment with new ways of working and behaving together as a real team.
Developing teams can be considered a journey, as is learning to sail the yacht together.
It’s quite achievable to have a novice crew sailing a yacht within a couple of hours, and sailing well within 1 or 2 days.
Sailing is challenging thanks be to God’s ever-changing seas, winds & tides to challenge team performance. Suitable yachts from small and cheap to large and luxurious may be chartered from hundreds of convenient venues all around the world.
